Last Friday, the beloved Café Colmado hosted 1202 MAGAZINE’s “WOAH, DEMBOW” party. Here, we kicked off the jam-packed weekend, celebrating the Dominican parade and the rich history and culture of the Dominican people. The event also helped raise funds for the New York Immigration Coalition, as we recognize the attack on immigrant communities under the Trump administration. In addition to the specialty coffee and tea drinks offered at Colmado, Ten to One Rum provided guests with rum from the Dominican Republic.

To really bring the Dominican spirit, sounds were spun by Dominican DJs Total XTC, Synchro, and Luigi, who spun hours of dembow, bachata, meregnue, and more. Jbadvss, another beloved Dominican and New York City cultural shifter, graced us as a host who brought his authentic self to an authentic space. In front of the café, jewelry and accessories brand Grisé displayed and sold their unique rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and eyewear.

In the back of the café, The Shop XY gave visitors the opportunity to customize screen-printed Dominican-themed t-shirts. Customization graphics included the Café Colmado logo and Dominican staples, such as the Carnival costume head of Los Lechones, papayas, Brugal rum, Café Bustelo, dominoes, and many more. Guests (as well as employees) danced bachata, played dominoes, and enjoyed the beautifully curated back patio with a drink always in hand.
