Your Next Upstate Trip is to ‘Modus Operandi’ at The School: Jack Shainman Gallery

About three hours upstate New York, nestled in the little town of Kinderhook, is The School: Jack Shainman Gallery. On view until November 28, 2026, Modus Operandi is the school-turned-gallery’s newest group exhibition featuring 19 artists from around the world and across various mediums.
Modus Operandi is Latin for ‘mode of operating,’ and this exhibition explores different ways of thinking through methods, objects, images, paintings, videos, textiles, and more. Many of the artworks shown throughout have been fundamental in shaping the artists’ careers, and the methods themselves show how the artists coexist with their works.

This exhibition came to life through a longtime collaboration between Jack Shainman and the eponymous New York City gallerist Angela Westwater. Featured artists include El Anatsui, Radcliffe Bailey, Yoan Capote, Nick Cave, Mark Dion, Jannis Kounellis, Guillermo Kuitca, Wolfgang Laib, Amy Lincoln, Barry McGee, Meleko Mokgosi, Richard Mosse, Bruce Nauman, Elizabeth Neel, George Rickey, Faith Ringgold, Alexis Rockman, Susan Rothenberg, and Rose B. Simpson.
As you enter The School, you’re greeted with Alexis Rockman’s 1992 painting, Evolution, and Yoan Capote’s 2014 sculpture depicting a spine made of handcuffs, New Man. Every room, wall, hallway, and nook and cranny is filled with artwork—whether it be a video projection, a large-scale installation, a moving structure, or a life-size sculpture.

Every artist in Modus Operandi demonstrates a central motif that leads back to different methods, whether it be racial and political history, family, memories, the environment, resistance, repetition, conflict, and many more.
